Our infrastructure specialists construct a comprehensive portfolio of energy assets, incorporating advanced technologies; these include grid connected power networks, flexible generation & storage, EV charging, heat & cooling, and smart/microgrid solutions.
What is the role?
The Business Development Manager is a key role, employed to drive forward our business relationships and solutions primarily with Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), consultants, developers and principal contractors for new build industrial, commercial, and mixed-use developments. Experience in these markets, with a track record in solution selling is a key requirement, as you will be expected to develop a strong qualified pipeline and execute to contract award. Working with internal stakeholders, experts and external partners, you will ensure our proposition is scoped and developed in line with our clients’ needs and our business strategy.
The role’s primary focus will be aligned to the adoption of electricity network assets for our affiliated IDNO business, Optimal Power Networks (OPN). OPN has an ambitious growth trajectory in the expanding GB-wide IDNO market and is strongly committed to supporting the energy transition by investing millions of pounds in networks that are fit for the future.
This exciting role is a genuine opportunity to position SSE as a provider of choice in the distributed energy market. The role will report into the Head of Business Development, although you’ll work with, on a day-to-day basis, through our matrix structure across our sector teams led by our proposition Sector Directors, and the IDNO Management Team. You’ll be flexible with focus on the market across Great Britain and will be required to develop enduring, broad relationships and pipeline across various stakeholders.
The role will develop a wide and close network of clients along with other stakeholder relationships to ensure awareness and influence on market and to continuously adapt propositions to suit both. You’ll be the main client interface throughout the proposition phase. You’ll also have input and oversight to the supporting development teams to ensure that propositions/bids are delivered on time and positions taken during negotiation are approved and signed off by the business in line with business governance processes.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Origination, qualification and scoping new opportunities for electricity networks and broader distributed energy projects.
- Developing and maintaining key accounts and client relationships, and with other key stakeholders across the eco-system of an opportunity.
- Developing and managing a pipeline of opportunities across a wide client base.
- Manage bids for IDNO adoptions including project development, tender submissions, internal governance processes and contractual negotiation.
- Attending networking events as required and deliver speaker slots, both internally and externally to build brand awareness.
- Bringing client drivers and market intelligence to all propositions/bids , and as appropriate, pre-position our offering and USPs ahead of procurement processes.
- Monitoring the market to identify emerging technologies and solutions.
- Direct responsibility for ensuring propositions/bids successfully transition from initial bid to handover to delivery and operations teams.
- Ensuring both technical and commercial solutions meet the client’s requirements and our financial performance requirements.
What do I need?
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Proven track record with extensive relevant experience in the ICP and/or IDNO sector.
- Proven experience securing business with electricity networks in the industrial, commercial and mixed-use markets.
- In depth knowledge and broad technical understanding of high and low voltage electricity networks, up to 132kV and IDNO electricity distribution networks.
- Highly experienced networker and relationship manager – connected and able to build and manage diverse relationships with a wide group of stakeholders.
- Excellent influencing expertise with the ability to engage with a wide stakeholder group.
- Sound judgement – with the ability to interpret, analyse and disseminate complex, sensitive information.
- Experience of solution / consultative client engagement and building bespoke value propositions with customers across a complex range of technology and solutions.
- Experience communicating complicated projects internally to gain approval through governance processes.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal including management of CRM system.
